Carrier Oils

CarrierOils

When I started my journey of making my own beauty products, I got confused with the different types of oil and why you should use one over the other. So I decided to compile a condensed version of the benefits and uses of each of the oils that I have discovered in my research.

First of all, what exactly is a carrier oil?
Carrier oils are base oils that dilute or “carry” essential oils that are applied directly to the skin. If essential oil is applied directly to the skin they can cause a burning or irritation of the skin to some people. However, carrier oils them selves have beneficial properties, therefore it’s important to choose the carrier oil that best suits your skin’s needs.

When purchasing carrier oils for your skin, make sure you buy oils that are cold pressed. Cold pressed oil is oil produced through a combination of grinding and low heat. Cold pressed oils retain all of their flavor, aroma, and nutritional value.

Avoid the use of mineral oil or petroleum jelly on your skin. They are byproducts of petroleum production and do not penetrate the skin, and therefore prevents essential oil absorption. They are also known to clog pores, prevent the skin from breathing naturally, prevent the essential oils from absorbing into your skin and prevent toxins from leaving your body.
